“Suiho En” (the garden of water and fragrance) is a 6.5 Acre authentic Japanese garden fashioned after “stroll gardens” constructed during the 18th and 19th centuries for Japanese feudal lords. Our facility is unique because it incorporates three classical designs: a dry karensansui, a wet garden with promenade chisen, and an authentic tea ceremony garden incorporating a 4.5 Tatami mat tea room.

Established in 1984.

The basic engineering concepts were to build an attractive “upstream” facility for removing 95% of the water from sewage. This would relieve the demand on the Hyperion Treatment Plant and forestall the necessity of a new sewage tunnel through the valley. The 95% goal was maintained, and the other 5% of the water would carry the sludge down to Hyperion where it would be burned to generate electricity. The Valley facility would interface with the public through an authentic Japanese Garden with a theme of the peaceful, beautiful uses of recycled water. The Japanese Garden shares the address of the Tillman Reclamation Plant on Woodley Avenue in Van Nuys. Ample free parking adjacent to the entrance of the garden is provided for visitors. Admission to the Garden for docent-led or self-guided tours is $3.00 per person, $2.00 for seniors 62+ & children under 10. We are closed on holidays observed by the City of Los Angeles.
