Why travel far for an outdoor adventure when you can experience nature in an urban environment right in your own backyard? The Paddle in the City series is brought to you by HERO USA in partnership with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. In 2017, from August through the end of October, as part of HERO USA’s community outreach program, Paddle in the City offered weekly guided kayak, canoe and SUP classes on some of the most scenic portions of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers. The 2018 season will be even better as we will be opening in the spring allowing you to to see downtown Columbus Ohio in all three of the paddling seasons. All guides are certified instructors. Participants receive a Quick-Start to Paddling Safety course prior to hitting the water. Once afloat, HERO USA instructors guide participants down river while teaching skills development and nature education.
Established in 2009.
HERO USA is a Columbus-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, devoted to making a difference for children in the community who are facing social, physical, and economical obstacles. We partner with community organizations and provide disadvantaged youth the opportunity to learn basic skills and safe practices for participating in various recreational sports such as kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, skateboarding, wake boarding, snowboarding and skiing, thus enhancing their quality of life. We do this to provide a safe, sanctioned place for kids to exercise, socialize, and develop lifelong skills. There are several barriers limiting access to outdoor recreational and adventure sports training for under-resourced youth. HERO USA breaks down these barriers by creating educational opportunities that kids might otherwise not have access to and provide the chance to build confidence all while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
